It was 2001, when a recent college graduate is faced with a choice between the glittering lights of London and the blue skies of his hometown Mombasa, an island along the Kenyan coast. He puts off the decision as he begins to sell handicrafts made by Kenyan artisans in bustling London markets. At a time when fast fashion is booming, Mohamed sees the value of a product made with traditional techniques. Accessories with a history, and a return that would help improve the lives of people back home. He spent the next year with a small group of artisans in Kenya to develop a line of handmade leather sandals. Authentic and rough, they are not perfect but have charm and character. The more time passes, the more the project is refined, raising the bar on quality and attention to detail. In 2014, the brand launched its first winter collection, preserving traditional craftsmanship and giving back to the local community.
